Once Upon A December: Ch. 1
Courtney Matthews was sitting in a car beside the man she loved during a blizzard. It was snowing heavily; making the entire road and woods look like the North Pole. She shivered in the cold, even though the heat was on full blast.
Jason Morgan looked at her small frame shake from the freezing temperature.
“Are you cold?” he asked, already knowing the answer. She mock glared at him.
“Well it’s probably below zero if it’s snowing this hard,” Courtney commented, looking out the car window. “How much farther to the cabin?”
“Still a ways,” Jason said. She shivered again. He looked in the backseat and grabbed a blanket. The blonde smiled weakly and gratefully wrapped it around her shoulders.
“Any chance we could just skip telling Sonny and just - -“
“No, we owe it to Sonny to tell it to his face. Wait a minute; here’s the turn,” he said, turning the steering wheel. Courtney scoffed.
“Turn? I don’t even see the road we’re on!” she said, wrapping the blanket tighter around her shaking body.
“Oh, come on. We’re safe remember?” Jason said, looking at her. Suddenly, the tires screeched and Courtney looked at him like he just told her the sky was purple.
After about twenty more minutes of driving, Courtney started getting worried.
“Okay - - no street lights, no cabin lights. It’s official; we’re lost,” she said through her shivering. Jason laughed.
“No; it’s an adventure.”
“Yeah, not even close. Adventures have guides and compasses and maps, even,” she said, shaking again.
“Are sure you’re okay?” Jason asked seriously; seeing her continue to shiver from the cold. Courtney looked at him and nodded.
“Fine; just a little cold,” she said, giving him a small smile. He didn’t believe her, but kept driving down the snow-covered road. They wouldn’t be all the way out in nowhere if they didn’t have to tell her brother that they had been seeing each other behind his back for two months. They would be lying on a beach in the Caymans with Courtney’s head lying on his bare chest as they looked out at the beautiful ocean that surrounded the islands.
‘Courtney in a bikini,’ Jason thought. Just the thought of that made his heart race. Every time he saw Courtney his heartbeat quickened. She was the only one that had the power to do that without even trying. He loved her so much, but Jason wasn’t sure if it was the right time to say so. It never seemed to be the right time.
‘Maybe when we get to the Caymans,’ he thought. Yes; then he would tell Courtney his real feelings for her. She could make him feel things that he thought had turned off for good a long time ago; after Robin betrayed him.
“It’s okay. We’re going to get to the cabin soon. There aren’t that many roads up here,” Jason said, breaking his reverie he had been in. She scoffed again.
“This is a road?”
“Are you in a hurry?”
Courtney thingyed her head and smiled at him.
“No, not at all. Just watch the road - - no, I’m just fine here with you in our own little snowglobe,” she joked. Jason laughed. She could make him laugh almost as if it was as easy as walking.
Courtney looked back at the road and gasped.
“Jason! Watch out!” she screamed. Jason’s eyes snapped back to the road as he tried to swerve, but the ice on the road prevented him from doing so. Before he could register what was happening, the car came in contact with something with a loud crash and everything went dark.

Once Upon A December: Ch. 2
Jason’s eyes groggily opened. Where was he?
Slowly, he sat up and remembered what had happened. Panicked, he looked over at Courtney. Her head was against the dashboard, blood all over her blonde hair. Even though he was in a lot of pain, he cautiously lifted her head up. Her forehead was bleeding what seemed like buckets of blood. He gulped and grabbed his cell phone.
“Come on, come on!” Jason ordered; frustrated to the phone. But there was no use. The blizzard was cutting off all signals. They were stuck.
He gently pushed Courtney limp body upright and grabbed two clean blankets from the backseat. One he wrapped around her head; just enough so it wasn’t too tight but it helped to stop the blood. The other blanket he wrapped around her freezing body. Jason then pulled her onto his lap and wrapped his arms around her; trying to keep her warm. He checked her pulse. It was weak, but there was a faint beating.
“Come on, baby. Please wake up. I love you too much to lose you,” he pleaded; tears running down his cheeks. He suddenly felt very alone and very tired.
*~*
Courtney opened her eyes. Where was she? Standing up, she looked around. It was like she was on a huge cloud.
“Hello? Is anyone here?” she called out. No one answered. The blonde walked around. She noticed what looked like a TV screen in a cloud-like wall. Confused, Courtney walked up to it. Suddenly, it flickered on. She looked closer and noticed it was Jason in the wrecked car. And he was holding her blanket wrapped body and talking to her.
‘What’s he saying?’ she thought. Almost as if whoever was in charge of this had physic powers, the sound turned on and she heard Jason talking to her.
“Courtney please wake up. Please baby, I love you way too much to lose you. Hang on, baby,” he said to her. Courtney gasped. He loved her? Jason Morgan, the love of her life, love her? She bit her lip. Then she noticed her head was also wrapped in a blanket. A blood soaked blanket.
Courtney screamed and jumped back. She had just now noticed that there was blood all over her clothes and in her hair. She reached up and felt her face. It was covered in dried blood. Her breathing quickly sped up. She looked back at the TV screen. It was fading. Now all of the sudden all of her memories flashed on and off on the screen. It was like her entire life if someone hit the fast forward button. It went all the way up until the accident. Then for some reason, it went back in time.
The blonde moved closer to the screen and realized what memory it was. She remembered every single detail about that night. Even the date. December 6, 2002.
As she watched the memory on the screen, tears filled her eyes slowly as she remembered everything that happened that night.
‘More than Jason knew,’ Courtney thought, placing her hand on her stomach. As the replay of the night she and Jason made love for the first time, she felt like all the other memories were slowly leaving her mind. The only one that mattered was this one. When it ended, the screen went black and she felt like her head was spinning in circle. She dropped onto the cloudy floor. Her eyes felt so heavy; so very heavy.
“Jason,” she whispered, before her eyes shut and her soul disappeared.
*~*
Jason continued rubbing Courtney’s shoulders; trying to keep her body heat up.
“Come on, baby. Please wake up. Please,” he pleaded. Suddenly, there was a flashlight shining through the windshield. “We’re in here! She needs to get to a hospital!” he yelled. “It’s going to be okay, Courtney,” he said, rubbing her cheek. She didn’t move.
*~*
Sonny and Carly rushed into the emergency room. Bobbie was waiting for them; tears running down her cheeks.
“Where’s Courtney?!” Sonny asked frantically.
“She’s in surgery. They don’t know if they-they’re going to make it,” Bobbie managed to say.
“Jason’s in surgery too?” Carly asked. Bobbie shook her head.
“No; he’s b-being examined right now. Courtney-Courtney is in surgery. They are trying to save her and the b-baby.”
Sonny’s eyes widened. Carly was also very shocked.
“Baby? Courtney’s pregnant?” Sonny said, not believing his baby sister was pregnant. Bobbie nodded before needing to leave to help someone. He turned to his wife.
“Did you know about this?”
“No, I swear to God, Sonny I didn’t. I don’t even think Jason knows,” Carly said, then immediately regretting it.
“Jason? Why would she tell him before - -“ he started, but then he got it. Jason was the father. “Did you know that they were seeing each other?”
Carly sighed and nodded. Sonny’s eyes reflected anger and betrayal.
“Sonny before you get all upset, concentrate on the health of your sister and niece or nephew that are fighting for their lives!” the dark blonde said. He looked at her and nodded. He had to think about Courtney right now.
*~*
Jason was admitted for observation, but he needed to see if Courtney was okay. His head hurt and he was in pain, but he could barely feel it. He knew the accident was his fault. He should have kept a better eye on the road. If Courtney died, heaven forbid, it would be his fault.
‘She can’t die,’ he tired to convince himself. ‘I love her so much. I never got to tell her.’
There was a knock at the door.
“Come in.”
A red-eyed Carly poked her head in the door. It was obvious she had been crying.
“Are y-you up for visitors?” she asked, trying to smile. He nodded.
“How’s Courtney?”
“S-She’s in surgery. T-The doctors don’t know if they’ll make it or not,” Carly said, sitting on the bed.
“They? What are you talking about?” Jason asked, confused. She sighed. He didn’t know.
“Jase, um, I don’t know if I’m the right one to tell you this, but.....Courtney’s pregnant,” the dark blonde said, waiting for Jason’s reaction. He stared at her like she had grown two heads.
“Preg-pregnant? Courtney’s pregnant?” he stammered, trying to get hold on those words. Carly sadly nodded. “Oh my God.”
“Sonny....Sonny knows. About the baby and....that you two were seeing each other,” she explained softly, looking at her hands. Jason rubbed his sore forehead.
“No...this can’t be happening. I love her! If the baby dies it’s going to be my fault!”
*~*
“Sonny?”
Sonny looked up at Monica. He stood up quickly.
“How’s Courtney?” he asked frantically. Monica sighed.
“She.....She’s lost a major amount of blood in a short amount of time. The baby is fine, but she still runs the risk of a miscarriage. Courtney’s in the recovery room right now. I don’t know when she’ll wake up.....or even if she will,” Monica said, tears filling her eyes. Sonny nodded and walked into the recovery room.
Courtney was lying on a hospital bed; her entire head wrapped in bandages. A oxygen mask covered her nose and mouth and at least a dozen machines beeped around her. Her face had a few cuts on it. Sonny hated to see his sister like this. He sat down on the chair next to her and held her ice-cold hand.
“Hey sis. I don’t know if you can hear me or not, but you have to wake up, okay? The baby, Jason, Carly, Michael, and I love you so much. I know we never got to spend much time together, but I want to. I want to get to know my baby sister. I love you so much,” Sonny said, tears filling his brown eyes.
*~*
After a few hours, Sonny was still sitting beside Courtney. Monica sighed when she came in.
“Sonny,” she said softly. He turned around.
“I’m going to have to ask you to leave. We have to get Courtney up to her room,” Monica said. He nodded and stood up. Courtney stirred.
“Wait - - I think she’s waking up,” Sonny said, looking at her, hoping she was. Her blue eyes slowly blinked open.
“Jason - -,” she whispered. Her eyes shut for a second then opened again. She blinked and looked at Sonny. He grinned.
“Courtney, you’re awake! I knew you were too strong to give up,” he said triumphantly. Courtney looked at him with a confused expression on her face.
“Who are you?” she asked.

Once Upon A December: Ch. 3
Sonny froze. She didn’t remember him. He heard Monica gasp behind him. Courtney just stared. Who was he? And the woman behind him? Where was she?
“Courtney.....do you know where you are?” Monica asked cautiously, now standing beside Sonny.
“Am I Courtney?”
Monica nodded.
“I....don’t know....where I am....” she said, looking around. Monica bit her lip. Sonny was still looking at her without moving.
“Sonny....maybe you should go tell Jason what’s happened,” she suggested. He sighed and nodded and walked out of the recovery room. Monica sat down in the chair Sonny had occupied.
“Your name is Courtney Matthews. You’re in a hospital. You were in a car accident and you lost a lot of blood when you hit your head. That’s....that’s probably why you have lost your memory,” she tried to explain slowly. Courtney looked out the window. She lost her memory? She felt like she didn’t even have a memory to begin with.
“Do you remember anything at all?”
She closed her eyes and thought for a second.
“No,” she said, her voice dry. Monica sighed.
“That’s okay....we should get you moved up to your room,” she said, standing up.
“Uh.....who...who was the man who was in here before?” Courtney asked, her voice dripping with fatigue.
“That was your brother, Sonny,” Monica replied.
*~*
Sonny opened the door to Jason’s room to find him and Carly deep in conversation. They abruptly stopped when he came in.
“H-How is she?” Carly asked frantically. Sonny sighed. He sat down beside Carly.
“I know.....I know this might sound crazy....even....impossible to understand....but I saw it with my own eyes...,” Sonny started, not even sure if he could finish. “Courtney’s-Courtney doesn’t....she...she lost her memory. She doesn’t remember anything...”
Jason gasped. No, this couldn’t be happening. He loved Courtney so much and he almost lost her. And now he had. He had lost the Courtney he knew and loved so much.
“No....she...she couldn’t of lost her memory! She couldn’t have!” Jason said, standing up. Carly started crying. A tear slipped from Sonny’s eye as he remembered that Courtney couldn’t remember him. “I never....I never got to tell her that I loved her....”
“You fell in love with my sister?”
“Yes....we....we were on our way to the cabin....to tell you face to face, Sonny, that we had been seeing each other without....without you knowing about us,” Jason replied. Sonny sighed. He felt angry, but yet, he thought that he couldn’t do anything to make Jason stop loving her. But Courtney couldn’t remember anything. How can you love someone you don’t remember?
*~*
The next day, Jason was released from the hospital, but he didn’t leave it. He went straight to see Courtney and he found her in there talking with Monica. When he came in, Courtney looked up at him and her eyes met the most beautiful, deep, blue eyes she had seen in the last twelve hours. She looked so much different. Not really on the outside, but her eyes seemed to have lost their luster and happiness.
“Jason! I’m glad to see that you are feeling better. Uh, why don’t you stay here with Courtney while I go check on something,” Monica said, standing up. He nodded.
“Thanks,” he whispered when she walked by. She smiled.
“No problem.” She then left. Jason sighed and sat down beside her. She gave him a small smile.
“I’m sorry....I don’t remember you,” she said quietly.
“It’s okay. My name’s Jason, by the way,” he said. She smiled.
“I’m sorry I don’t remember.....anything really. I know my name and that I have a brother but that’s about it,” Courtney whispered, looking out the window.
“Yeah, Sonny does that too.”
“What?”
“He looks out the window whenever he’s stressed out or nervous.”
“Does he get stressed out a lot?”
“Yeah....I guess you could say that,” Jason said. Courtney nodded.
“So how do I know you?” she asked. He sighed.
“I work for Sonny.”
She nodded. He wasn’t sure if he wanted to tell her that they were in love quite yet. Hell, he wasn’t even sure that she knew she was pregnant yet. “So we were friends?”
Jason laughed to himself.
“Yeah you could say that.”
Courtney nodded.
“So.....how well did you know me?”
He probably knew her better than anyone else.
“Pretty well. I mean, you weren’t afraid to come to me with your problems or anything,” Jason replied. She nodded again.
“I’m sorry that I don’t remember you. I want to, I really do. But....”
He reached up and put his hand over hers.
“Hey - - it’s not your fault. You can’t control what you remember....but Sonny and Carly and I want to help you remember,” Jason said. Courtney sat there for a moment. When he touched her hand, it was like a spark of electricity shot up her arm. But....it felt somewhat familiar.
“Who’s Carly?”
“Sonny’s wife. Well, actually, his second wife,” Jason said. “He was married before Carly but....she and their unborn child died in a bomb.”
“I’m sorry.”
“Yeah, I don’t really think Sonny fully got over it. But now he and Carly are married and they have a son, Michael. Sonny adopted Michael so he’s like a father to him. Carly and Sonny had a baby once, but....Carly fell down a flight of stairs and had a miscarriage,” he explained. He hated to think that Courtney almost had one herself.
“Wow. That’s a lot for my brother to go through,” Courtney said.
“Yeah, but he’s strong. He’s got Michael and Carly......and you worth fighting for,” he said softly, looking up at her. She smiled.

Once Upon A December: Ch. 4
Jason walked out of Courtney’s hospital room feeling very empty inside. When they had been together before the accident, he had always felt like he was complete. But now, it was just the opposite. He loved her so much and he couldn’t do anything to bring her memory back.
“Hey Jase. You okay?” Carly asked, putting her hand on his shoulder. He sighed and nodded.
“She.....She doesn’t remember me. Or anybody.”
“Does she even know she’s pregnant?” Sonny asked, concerned for his baby sister. Did Courtney know she was pregnant? It was likely she did, but she didn’t mention anything about it when he was with her. Monica walked by.
“Hey Monica, does Courtney...does Courtney know she’s pregnant?” Jason asked her. Monica stopped.
“We are holding out on telling her for awhile because she could get very upset and stressed out which could effect the baby considering her current state,” she explained.
“So she doesn’t know?” Carly asked. She nodded.
“So I wouldn’t advise any of you to tell her until she is released,” she said before walking away. Jason sat down and put his head in his hands. Why did this have to happen to her? He never got to tell her how much he loved her. She had told him and he had felt the same way for a long time. But he never found the right time to.
“Jase, she’ll get better. Courtney and the baby are fine,” Carly said, sitting down beside him.
“For now. But what will happen when she finds out? I didn’t tell her that...that we had been involved because I didn’t want to pressure her,” he said, rubbing his forehead.
“We wouldn’t have this problem if you two hadn’t been involved in the first place, Jason,” Sonny said, letting his anger take over.
“Sonny, please do not fight with him on this -“ Carly started.
“It wouldn’t even matter! She doesn’t remember our relationship so she’s not in danger!” Jason said sarcastically. “But that’s what you want, right? For your baby sister to be safe? She’s not Sonny! Your enemies know who she is and they know that by hurting her they hurt you!”
Sonny didn’t say anything. He was right. Courtney would never be safe, no matter what she remembered or what she didn’t.
Jason shook his head and got into the elevator without saying another word. Once he got into the parking lot, he got on his bike and drove. He didn’t know where he was going to go, so he just let his heart drive.
Before he knew it, he was at the loft. He walked in and looked around. It still had all of her things here and some of his too. Jason sighed and sat down on the bed. Innumerable times he had slept in this bed with her in his arms. Tears flew to his eyes as he wished he could to that just one more time.
He noticed the picture of the two of them on the wood divider. It had been taken in December, around Christmas. Jason remembered walking into the loft on Christmas Eve and her in his arms in a second, kissing her passionately. He had wanted her that night, but they had an agreement. He doubted he would ever get to do that again.
A small book was on the floor near the bed. Leaning down and picking it up, he noticed it was Courtney’s journal. Jason opened the first page and noticed the date; December 16, 2002.
I surprised Jason with the loft today. I think he’s glad that we got it. He doesn’t want me to be uncomfortable about us seeing each other . We also talked about us sleeping together. I’m really glad we did because I wanted to get that off my chest for awhile. We agreed that when the time is right for the both of us, we would make love again. I like that idea. When I made love to Jason a few nights ago, I finally felt like I was doing it and being loved back. I hope he feels the same way too. Who knows; maybe I’m falling in love.
Jason closed the journal and placed it on the bed beside her pillow. He missed holding her so much. He missed kissing her and her laugh and the way she always seemed to light up when he walked into the room. He missed her.

Once Upon A December: Ch. 5
Courtney sat on the chair by the window; staring outside. She had never been anywhere outside the hospital since the accident and she was desperately in need of getting out.
“Hey Court,” Carly said, walking in. She looked up at her and gave her a small smile and resumed staring outside.
“When are you going to get me out of here?” the blonde asked.
“We are trying for this afternoon. But....we don’t know where you would want to live. The doctors say they don’t want to overwhelm you with memories,” Carly said softly. Courtney nodded. She understood.
“I want to be somewhere where I can just....be alone. But I want to be where I’ve been before to help bring the memories back,” she said. The dark blonde nodded and smiled.
“I know just the place.”
*~*
TEXT
“Hey Jason , uhh....can I talk to you for a minute?” Sonny asked as he walked in. Jason nodded. He knew what was probably coming. And he had to accept it.
Sonny sighed before starting.
“You know that I trust you with my business....my life....my family’s lives....and....that includes Courtney. I....I know you two were involved before....the accident...but, she doesn’t remember....you....or anything or anyone else for that matter,” he said slowly. “So....I don’t want her to get the chance to fall in love with you all over again. You can’t give her anything that will last, Jason.”
Jason’s face hardened. He was using Courtney’s accident to make him not start up again what had been the greatest time of his life. Courtney was everything to him. He loved her so much.
“Sonny....Courtney....Courtney wouldn’t want you to be making decisions for her. And.....she needs all of us right now. And that includes me,” he replied calmly.
“Well not in the way that you set her up to get her heat broken! She doesn’t need that!”
“Do you know what you are doing?! You are using her accident to keep us apart! How do you know what she wants? None of us do anymore! She’s pregnant Sonny! With my child! No way in hell am I going to just forget that! Yes, I didn’t know until the Bobbie told us, but it doesn’t change anything!”
It was Sonny’s turn for his face to harden when he realized he was right. It wasn’t right to use his need to keep his sister safe by keeping a father from his child. He sighed deeply and ran his fingers through his hair.
“Sonny......Courtney will never be safe. And she’s.....she’s more vulnerable now more than ever. I can protect her like you protect Carly and Michael and the baby,” Jason said quietly. Sonny looked up at him and reluctantly nodded.
“You cannot tell Courtney that you are the father. It would be.....forcing her to remember something that......that shouldn’t come up until.....unless she asks, don’t tell her.”
Jason wanted to argue, but he wanted to get back to Courtney. He nodded and left.
*~*
Courtney pulled on a pair of jeans and a sweatshirt Carly had brought her. As she pulled them on, she noticed that her stomach sort of stuck out.
‘Geez, I must of been a hell of a pig,’ she thought. She grabbed the brush from the bedside table and a clip and pulled her blonde hair back into the clip. Her hand ran over her forehead. There was a light scar there. Obviously a souvenir of the accident. She sighed.
“Hey Courtney.”
Courtney turned around to see Jason standing in the doorway. Strangely, she wanted to rush into his arms, but she just smiled. His eyes seemed to light up whenever he saw her. But they had a certain sadness to them. Almost like he was carrying a burden that he wished he didn’t.
“Hey,” she said softly. The woman standing in front of him looked like an angel. Even without any makeup and in nothing but a sweatshirt and jeans, she looked like a goddess. His goddess. Well, used to be his goddess.
Carly came in, grinning.
“Courtney, you’ve been released! We can take you home!”
Courtney grinned and gave her sister-in-law a hug. Carly smiled and tears flew to her eyes as her best friend embraced her. Maybe things could go back to normal.
“By the way....where is home?” the blonde asked. Carly looked from Courtney to Jason then back again.
“Uhh....you used to live in a loft before.....and anyway, it’s very comfortable and I thought maybe you could live there,” she said. Jason stared at her like she was crazy.
“Carly, can I talk to you for a minute outside?” he asked her with a cold look. She scowled at him but followed him outside.
Courtney sighed again. Why did it seem like everyone just thought she was a problem? And why couldn’t she remember any of her past? Was it not worth remembering?
She rubbed her forehead and walked over to the window. The blonde did remember one thing. But she didn’t really understand it. It seemed more like a dream than reality.
*~*
“What the hell are you thinking sending Courtney to the loft?!” Jason asked his best friend, trying to not get to involved. Carly put her hands on her hips and glared at him.
“Jason, Courtney doesn’t need any added stress right now since she’s...... anyway, it’s the prefect place because she has so many memories - -“
“Exactly, and she can’t feel pressured to remember anything!
“She’s not going to feel pressured if we don’t pressure her! I mean, that place holds so many memories for the both of you. Courtney doesn’t have to remember anything if she doesn’t want to!”
Jason glared at her. She was right.
“Fine!” he said, going back into the hospital room. Courtney was sitting on a chair by the window; looking down at the park. She looked up at him when he came in and smiled.
“Is everything okay?”
“Umm...yeah. We’re going to move you into your old place today,” Jason replied, not being able to look her in the eye. She nodded and continued looking out the window. “You can tell you are Sonny’s sister.”
“What?”
“Whenever he’s stressed out, he looks out the window for hours,” he explained. She smiled to herself and walked over and sat on the bed in front of Jason.
“So how much do you know about me? Or the old me....I guess,” she asked, looking at her hands.
“What do you want to know?”
Courtney looked up at him and grinned.
“You make it sound you know everything there is to know about me.”
Jason laughed and sat down beside her.
“Well.....we were really good friends. I spent a lot of time with you,” he said. She looked at him for a second. How good was really good?

Once Upon A December: Ch. 7
After breakfast, Michael and Jason went to the park to play. Sonny and Carly had planned this so they could tell Courtney in private about her pregnancy.
“So....Courtney how do you like what you’ve seen of Port Charles so far?” Sonny asked, trying to avoid the subject. Carly glared at him; realizing what he was doing. Courtney did not notice.
“Well....I haven’t seen much except the loft, the hospital, and here. I want to see more of it, though.”
“I’m sure we could do that. Maybe seeing the rest of the town could bring up some memories,” Carly said cautiously. She just nodded. “Ummm.....Court....there’s something we have to tell you.”
She looked at her strangely for a second; confused.
“What is it?” she asked, sort of afraid to ask. Sonny sighed.
“Courtney.....you’re....you....you’re pregnant.”
His words hung in the air like fog. She stared at him for a minute; holding her breath. She didn’t want to believe him. She couldn’t be pregnant!
Then it dawned on her. The nauseous feeling in the pit of her stomach, the constant headache and dizziness.
Her breathing became ragged and she felt the room spinning and blood ringing in her ears. Pregnant?!
Courtney rubbed her forehead; trying to get the growing headache to go away.
“Courtney? Are you okay?” Carly asked, putting a hand on her shoulder. She looked up at her and it took everything in the dark blonde to keep from gasping. Courtney’s eyes were glazed over; emptiness filling their depths. Her beautiful blue eyes had lost all the light. They were as empty as her memories.
“I can’t.....b-be pregnant.....I can’t!” she finally said hoarsely. “I don’t....I don’t want this b-baby. I DON’T WANT TO HAVE A BABY!”
She broke down crying; her legs giving away. Carly caught her and Sonny helped her get Courtney on the couch. Almost immediately, she curled up into a ball; wrapping her arms around her body as if trying to protect herself as she cried. Sonny wrapped his arms around his little sister as he tried to comfort her.
“Shhh....it’s going to be okay...everything’s going to be okay,” he said softly. He looked up at Carly. She had tears running down her face as she witnessed her best friend and sister-in-law weeping over the discovery of her unborn child.
*~*
Once Michael and Jason returned from the park, Courtney had fallen asleep on the couch. Sonny draped a blanket over her sleeping form after realizing she had dozed off. He and Carly went into the kitchen to talk.
“Oh my God, Sonny. I can’t stand to see her like this.”
“Yeah I know. It’s like she is so distant now. And finding out that she’s pregnant won’t make things any better.”
Carly sighed.
“After you told her, I looked into her eyes. They were so.....lifeless and empty. It was like all the life was sucked out of her and she was just a skeleton. I’ve never seen anybody so......emotion-less.”
“Yeah I know what you mean. But hopefully she will come around to this and accept the fact that she’s pregnant.”
Hearing the door open, they emerged from the kitchen.
“That was so cool! Can we -“ Michael started saying to Jason, but stopped seeing Courtney asleep on the couch. Jason’s gaze flew to Carly and Sonny and they nodded. He sighed and knelt down to talk to Michael.
“Hey buddy, why don’t you go upstairs. I think Letecia is up there waiting for you.”
He turned around and ran up the stairs. Jason stood up and rubbed his forehead.
“Did you tell her?”
“Yeah. She.....she didn’t take it very well,” Sonny replied, looking over at his sister.
“What are we going to do?”
Sonny sighed.
“For now, just keep an eye on her. I think it would be too uncomfortable for her to live here with us, which is where I want to have her stay. So I thought that you should stay with her at the loft,” he said. Carly was shocked that he would propose such an idea, but quickly nodded her head at Jason without being viewed by Sonny who was standing in front of her.
“Okay. Do you think Courtney would like it, though?”
“Like what?” Courtney said from the couch. They all turned and looked at her. Carly walked over to the couch and sat on it beside her.
“Umm....we are thinking about having Jason move in with you in the loft to make sure that you are going to be okay.”
Her eyes met Jason’s. They were filled with compassion and....love? She sighed.
“If it will make you guys feel better....I guess it would be okay.”
Sonny and Carly let out a sigh of relief. Maybe things really would turn out okay.
*~*
Courtney walked into the loft with Jason behind her again. She took off her coat and threw it on the couch and then sat on it; rubbing her forehead.
“Tell me the truth, Jason. Did you know I was pregnant?” she asked sternly. He sighed.
“I didn’t up until the accident. I don’t think anybody did. Nobody knows if even you knew.”
Courtney bit her lip and pushed a strand of hair behind her ear.
“Do you know who the father is?” she asked.

Once Upon A December: Ch. 8
Jason gulped at her question. What was he supposed to say? He couldn’t lie to her. Yet he couldn’t tell her the truth.
Suddenly the phone rang. As Courtney got up to answer it, he let out a breath he hadn’t known he had been holding and ran his fingers through his hair. That was close. A little too close. “Hello?”
“Hey, it’s Carly. Is Jason there? He isn’t answering his cell.”
“Yeah, hold on.”
“It’s for you. It’s Carly,” she said, handing him the phone. “I’m going to change.”
“Okay. Hey Carly.”
“Hey. How’s Courtney?”
“Well I just barely got out of spilling the truth when she asked me if I knew who the father was.”
“Don’t worry; she will learn in time.”
Jason sighed.
“I hope you’re right. I can’t....I can’t stand being this close to her and not...”
“Being able to touch her? Yeah, I know the feeling. All I can say is don’t push her. If she’s anything like the old Courtney, she’ll end up attracted to you if she hasn’t already.”
“I don’t know if I can take it for much longer. I love her so much, Carly. And it hurts to see her so upset when she tries to remember something she can’t.”
Now it was Carly’s turn to sigh.
“Yeah. It will be that way for awhile, Jase. Don’t worry, everything will turn out okay.”
“I hope so.”
“Oh sh*t; Sonny, it’s not in that drawer - it’s in the one below it!”
Jason wasn’t sure he wanted to know what he was looking for and laughed to himself.
“Oh shut up, Mr. High-And-Mighty. I’d better go, Jase. I’ll talk to you tomorrow.”
“Okay. Have fun.”
“Haha, very funny. Bye.”
“Bye.”
Jason sighed and placed the phone on the coffee table and held his head in his hands. Just then, Courtney came out of the bathroom in a tight white tank top and a pair of pajama pants. Even in her pajamas, he thought she looked beautiful.
“Is something wrong?” she asked, seeing him stare at her. He shook his head.
“No...nothing,” he said quietly. How was he supposed to live with her for who knows how long and not do anything?
She smiled slightly and opened the closet door and pulled put a spare pillow and a blanket and handed them to him. As she did this, their fingers touched and she was almost positive she felt a surge of electricity flow up her arm He did also, but didn’t show it.
“Umm...I’m kind of tired...I-I think I’ll go to bed,” she stammered. He nodded.
“Goodnight.”
“Goodnight.”
*~*
The next morning Jason woke up on the couch. He sighed as he saw Courtney sleeping on the bed. Their bed.
But it wasn’t their’s anymore. Now it was her’s.
Suddenly his cell rang.
*~*
Courtney opened her eyes and blinked. The sun was shining directly on a note that was on the nightstand. Curious, she picked it up.
Dear Courtney,
Sonny called and he needs me at work. I’ll see you tonight.
- Jason
She sighed and got out of bed. Stretching, she noticed that her stomach was getting a little bigger. Her hand went to the small bulge in her abdomen.
“Don’t worry baby. I promise, even though I can’t remember how you came to be, I will keep you safe. No body will ever hurt you,” she whispered. *~*
After Courtney got out of the shower and changed, she decided to call Carly and ask her if she wanted to do something.
*~*
Carly paced the length of Penthouse Two as she wondered how she was supposed to tell Sonny. They had wanted this right? They had wanted to have another baby.
And this was their chance. She had taken a pregnancy test last night and by the time Sonny had come home, she had obviously fallen asleep and when she got up this morning, he wasn’t at the Penthouse.
The shrill ringing of the phone awoke Carly from her reverie.
“Hello?”
“Hey Carly!”
“Hey Court! How are you feeling?”
“Pregnant.”
Carly laughed.
“Aren’t you supposed to feel that way?”
“Well yeah! I’m starving; know any good places where I could get this baby and I some breakfast?”

Once Upon A December: Ch. 9
Courtney and Carly walked into Kelly’s just as AJ was leaving.
“Hey, Courtney, can I talk to you for a second?” he asked desperately.
“Um...am I supposed to know you?” she asked, confused at who this man was.
“Don’t give me that bullnuts, Court. I’m only your husband and father of your child!”
*~*
Jason ran his fingers through his hair as he tiredly walked up the stairs to the loft. He hadn’t been able to sleep last night. He couldn’t just be in the same room with her now and not be able to touch her, to hold her, to tell her how much he loved and cared about her.
This was his fault. If hadn’t been so careless that night in the storm this never would of happened.
Why did it have to happen to her? Why not him? He had lost his memory to amnesia once before; why not do it again? And she was pregnant, of all things!
Courtney was so perfect; so innocent. She didn’t deserve to have her brain wiped of all those memories. Especially the ones that he thought she could never forget because he couldn’t.
Maybe she did remember something. Or maybe she would someday.
Jason wanted more than anything for her to remember something, anything. But most especially, he wanted her to remember something about the love that they had shared.
‘I never got to tell her,’ he thought as he opened the door to an empty loft.
“Courtney?” he called out as he looked around the room.
He finally noticed a piece of paper on the coffee table and picked it up.
Dear Jason,
Don’t think that I’ve abandoned you (trust me, if I did Carly wouldn’t let me hear the end of it), Carly and I have gone to breakfast. The baby has to eat too!
All my love,
Courtney
Jason traced his fingers over her last four words of the note. She didn’t know what she was writing. He wished so much that he could tell her how much she meant to him and how much he wished that he could take her place in this messy predicament.
But he couldn’t. He couldn’t fix this. He couldn’t shoot somebody or make them disappear or beat them up until they told him how he could help her. He could do absolutely nothing.
**A/N: I used a quote from Friday, July 4th's episode during the last paragraph.**
